Care Packages for the Homeless
The bag:
We selected a pack of 10 wet bags, each with two pockets. In speaking with local homeless persons it was important to them to have something that could keep other valuables safe from the rain or snow. The bags have a loop that clips. This was important so that they could attach the bag to other bags, carts, or trailers, and does not take up more space inside their limited belongings or require them to carry it separately in their arms.
Resources:
We cannot (and should not) be everything to everyone. We created a map/calendar of local food resources, noting places that have additional offerings such as clothing, showers, and recovery. We made sure these were laminated so they could withstand weather.
Hygiene:
Toothbrush and toothpaste set
Nail clippers
Menstrual pads (3/10 bags)
Snacks:
Fruit snacks (4)
Protein bars (4)
Water (2)
Entertainment:
Playing cards
Book
Other:
Fresh socks. We got a ten-pack of moisture-wicking, durable, work-gear socks. Though we want these bags to be affordable, it is important that what we get are useful and long-lasting.
Emergency blankets. These are small and portable and can be used in a variety of ways for shelter or heat.
In total, we made 10 bags, each cost less than $12 to make.
